The Stour Federation Multi Academy Trust

Become a Governor

Join The Stour Federation: Help Shape the Future of Our Children

The Stour Federation is looking for dedicated individuals from our local communities to join us in a challenging but rewarding volunteer role as we strive for excellence across our family of primary schools. We are currently seeking forward-thinking individuals to join our expanding Trust Board as Directors and our Local Academy Councils as Governors.

Why Govern with Us?

Boards exist because complex organisations like school trusts need more than a single mind to govern well. By joining our governance community, you will contribute to our "collective intelligence," helping us see patterns, challenge assumptions, and generate options that no individual could produce alone. We are moving from "good to great" by adopting a stewardship mindset, acting as custodians of our schools to ensure they flourish for generations to come.

Opportunities for Impact

Trust Board Directors

As a Director (Trustee), you will provide strategic leadership and hold legal and strategic responsibility for the entire Trust. You will act as both a charity trustee and a company director, setting the context for the executive team and ensuring the integrity of our financial and educational performance. We are particularly looking for individuals interested in lead roles such as:

  • Developing a culture of safety across the Trust.

  • Overseeing the appropriate use of public funding and financial health.

  • Analysing performance metrics to ensure every child reaches their potential.

  • Ensuring an inclusive education for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Local Academy Council (LAC) Governors

Our LACs (local governing bodies) are essential to the success of individual schools. They maintain the school’s unique identity and values while holdingt the Headteacher to account for the quality of the school experience. This role provides vital local insight and accountability, ensuring our Trust remains anchored in the needs of the specific community it serves.

Who are we looking for?

There are  no specific qualifications required - we value a balance and diversity of age, knowledge, skills, and perspectives. You do not need to be a parent or an educator to apply. We are looking for people who:

  • Can think strategically and tolerate ambiguity in a complex educational system.

  • Act with integrity, objectivity, and honesty, adhering to the Seven Principles of Public Life.

  • Are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion to help our board make better decisions.

  • Have the time to contribute (approximately 6 evening meetings per year (one per half term) and occasional school visits).

Benefits and Support

Volunteering with us offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting difference for young people in your community. We are committed to your development and provide:

  • Induction training and ongoing professional development.

  • A shared language and framework for "next-gen" leadership.

  • The chance to work in partnership with executive leaders to co-develop the Trust’s direction.
